“A future in which we are happy to live, is shaped by people who care about creating a good future.” Anne M. Schüller (from her book *Zukunft meistern*)
Cooperatives are the economic organizations with the largest membership base in Germany. A total of 22.3 million people in Germany are members of a cooperative. In our everyday lives, we regularly encounter cooperatives — often without realizing it.
Cooperatives are an important organizational form not only for agricultural enterprises, but also across the entire value chain: from the joint production of energy and the collective procurement of raw materials to the sale of final products to consumers. What lies behind this economic model, and why is it more relevant to our times than ever?
❔ What is a cooperative?
❔ What characterizes this legal form?
❔ To what extent is the cooperative legal form suitable for my start-up?
In the course “Innovative Management of Cooperatives,” you will learn more about the background, advantages and challenges of cooperatives, as well as the many opportunities they offer. In addition to the theoretical component, you will also develop a business plan for your start-up as a cooperative (module no. 4202-501 in the course catalogue for winter semester 2026/27).
The module is conducted under the direction of Prof. Dr Sebastian Hess from the Agricultural Markets research group (420b), in cooperation with the Research Centre of Cooperatives at the University of Hohenheim (421).
